Glenn Beck Blatantly Violates FTC New Endorsement Guidelines under 16 CFR Part 255

December 15th, 2009

The Federal Trade Commission has adopted new guidelines concerning the use of endorsements and testimonials in advertising which took effect December 1, 2009. Apparently, Glenn Beck didn’t get the memo. Mr. Beck regularly uses his seat as an entertainer on FOX News to tell viewers they should implement the “three G System” of “god, gold and guns.” At the same time, he is an on air promotion and testimonial advertiser for Goldline International, a precious medal vendor.

You can find more information about Glenn Beck’s on air promotions at this link “Glenn Beck, Astroturfing for Gold?”. You can view the video wherein he clearly violates Part 255 endorsement disclosure requirements below:

It should also be noted that FOX News is required to monitor its on air personalities for compliance with 16 CFR Part 255 and is also potentially liable. Fines for violating the new rule are up to $11,000.00 per incident. It is unclear how many inappropriate endorsements have occurred on FOX News to date.
